Discover the famous Gate of Heaven or Lempuyang Temple in Bali, Indonesia — a must-visit for every traveler. Learn how to get there, entrance fees, photography tips, and temple rules before your trip.
If you’re planning a trip to Bali, Indonesia, one destination you shouldn’t miss is the Gate of Heaven, also known as Lempuyang Temple. This spot is one of the most iconic and Instagrammable places in Bali, offering a perfect blend of culture, spirituality, and breathtaking scenery.
Whether you’re a first-time traveler or returning for another Bali adventure, this place deserves a spot on your itinerary!
About the Gate of Heaven (Lempuyang Temple)
The Lempuyang Temple is located in Tista Village, Abang District, about a 2.5-hour drive from Kuta or Seminyak. It’s part of a larger temple complex and is considered one of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bali.
What makes it world-famous is the “split gate” that beautifully frames the majestic Mount Agung — creating that surreal, postcard-perfect photo you’ve probably seen all over Instagram.
The Truth Behind the “Magic Mirror” Photo
Many tourists think there’s a reflective pool in front of the gate — but here’s the secret: there’s no water at all! The illusion is created using what locals call the “magic mirror” — a photography trick that uses a mirror or phone screen to reflect the image of the gate and the sky. Clever, right?

Since this spot is very popular, expect a queue. Even if you leave early (we left at 4:30 AM), you might still get a queue number — mine was #50. Patience is key, but the view is definitely worth the wait!
Photography Tips for Travelers
If you’re traveling solo, no worries! The photo fee includes a local photographer who will take your pictures and guide you with poses.
Each guest has only a few minutes for photos, so be ready with your best poses. When they say “last pose,” that’s your final shot!
If you want a video, ask a friend or fellow traveler to take it for you, as the official photographer only handles photos.

2. Sarongs are provided for both men and women
3. Women on their monthly period are not allowed to enter the temple
