A lot of travelers are still afraid to travel to Mindanao especially to Basilan. The province’s reputation for tourism is not well caused by war and terrorism. That's a long time ago! And yes, Basilan is a nice province with a lot of interesting unspoiled attractions. On this blog, I'll be sharing must places to visit in Isabela City, Basilan

Malamawi Beach

Malamawi Beach in Isabela City is the most popular white beach in Basilan. It features a long stretch of white sandy beach dotted with towering tropical trees. The vibe of the place is like in Boracay. It is incredibly beautiful. You would definitely forget the dark side of the province if you see this place. Malamawi Beach is a must-visit destination in Basilan.  Here's the Malamawi Beach Full Review

Marang Marang Mangrove

For nature lovers out there, Marang Marang Mangrove is the place to be. It's one of the newest destinations that will surely attract more tourists to the town. It features well-protected green mangrove forests, flying colorful birds, and several water species. As you cruise down the calm river, you will notice some of the traditional Badjao (Sea Gypsies) homes.

Isabela City Forest Park

Surrounded by towering local trees, Isabela City Forest Park is a perfect place to encounter nature and wildlife. This forest park is said to be the 'lungs' of Isabela de Basilan. It's like the Pamulaklakin Forest in Subic, Zambales featuring several tropical tree and plant species. Some of these trees are over 1000-year old. I enjoyed this tour. The greenery and pristine natural scenery were totally refreshing and relaxing.

Mabarakat House

There are lots of beautiful mosques in Isabela City and one of these is Mabarakat House. The exterior of this structure was stunning and impressive. Inside the mosques, there are no chairs and tables. It's clean, peaceful, and spacious.

Santa Isabel Cathedral

Even Islam the dominant religion in the city, you can still find some Roman Catholic churches in Basilan. One of these churches is Sta. Isabel Cathedral. It's a small church located in the city proper. During Semana Santa (Holy Week), a lot of catholic join the city procession known as the Santo Entierro (Holy Funeral) on Good Friday which highlights the observance of Lent.

Mat Weaving in Tausug House

One of the exciting parts of our tour was traveling to Tausug Village. Our main reason to visit this place was to see how to make a Banig. This item is often referred to as the brown, handwoven mat commonly used for sleeping. Baníg weaving has been handed down from one generation to another as it is widely practiced in the country, with designs varying across the regions. We visited one of Badjao's houses and they showed us how to make a beautiful banig. It looks easy but it's not.

James Strong Boulevard

If you are looking for local food, it's advisable to visit James Strong Boulevard. You will find here a lot of street food and local dishes. The food is not only good but it's also budget-friendly.
