Capiz Travel Guide For First Time Travelers 2024

The province of Capiz is well-known for its freshest and most affordable seafood in the country. It features wide powdery gray-sand beaches, historical sites, eco-tourism destinations and a lot more. This simple province will surely give you a unique travel experience.

Capiz is located in the central section of the Philippines at the northeastern portion of Panay Island, bordering Aklan to the north, Antique to the west, and Iloilo to the south. Capiz faces the Sibuyan Sea to the north. Roxas City serves as the provincial capital and Capiznon and Hiligaynon are the two main local languages.

Dubbed as the "Seafood Capital of the Philippines", Capiz will definitely satisfy your craving for seafood dishes. Aside from the mouth-watering local dishes, there are different interesting places that you would enjoy while in Capiz. I have listed below some of the must-visit destinations in the province.

Roxas Cathedral

The Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral Parish known as Roxas Cathedral is one of the famous attractions in Roxas City.  This old church was built in 1877; reconstructed in 1954, is one of the oldest structures in the province. The original cathedral was destroyed by a typhoon in 1600. The renovation and restoration is totally completed. The structure itself is quite simple. It's a not touristy destination but it's great place for worship.

Roxas City Fountain

The Roxas City Fountain is located at the heart of city plaza, one of the iconic landmarks in Capiz. The original fountain was built in 1925 and was destroyed during World War II and was rebuilt in 1946. Nothing so special on this fountain. At night, it catches all the attention of the people through its lights and moving waters.

Roxas City Bridge

Across the Roxas City Fountain and Roxas Cathedral is the Roxas City Bridge (formerly Capiz Bridge). This old bridge was built in 1910 overlooking the Panay River. It's  one of the busiest bridge in the province, connecting the main road to the commercial centers. Passing the major edifice of the City, Roxas City River has been compared and dubbed as the "Venice of the Visayas".

Palina Greenbelt Ecopark

The Palina Greenbelt Ecopark  is famous for river cruises. You can enjoy the two-hour river tour on a bamboo raft while eating fresh seafoods like shrimps, oysters, crabs, prawns, squids, etc. To get here, get a tricycle and ask the driver to take you to Barangay Cagay, Sitio Cablatan. Fare is 8 to 100 pesos which is good for 4-5 pax.

Other destinations in Capiz include the Baybay Beach, The Sacred Heart of Jesus Shrine, Mantalinga Island, Sta Monica Church also known as Pan-ay Church ( Home of the biggest Christian Church Bell in Asia), Quipot Cave, Pilar Cave, Balisong Cave, Suhot Cave, Badian Cave, Balisong Cave, Igang Cave and Suhotan Cave .
