Discover the Rich History of the Feast of the Black Nazarene
The roots of this sacred event trace back to the commemoration of the translation or the relocation of the revered image from its original abode in Luneta Park to Quiapo. The Black Nazarene, an image of Jesus Christ, was initially housed in the Church of San Juan Bautista in Bagumbayan (now Luneta) until May 31, 1606, under the care of Augustinian Recollect priests. Subsequently, in 1608, the icon found its home at the Recollect church of San Nicolás de Tolentino in Intramuros, only to be later transferred to the Quiapo Church on January 9, 1787. This significant "solemn transfer" incidentally became the foundational date for the Feast of the Black Nazarene.
