Your Ultimate Guide to Riding Trains in Japan: Step-by-Step Instructions

If you're planning a trip to Japan, you'll likely find yourself taking a train at some point. Japan's train system is renowned for its efficiency, cleanliness, and punctuality, making it a popular mode of transportation for locals and tourists alike. However, if you've never ridden a train in Japan before, the process can be a bit daunting. At first, I need help using the train apps and which train I must choose. Thanks to my friend who guided me on how to use the navigation app. In this guide, I'll walk you through the steps of riding trains in Japan, so you can easily navigate the country.

Step 1: Purchase a ticket

The first step to riding a train in Japan is purchasing a ticket. You can buy tickets at the ticket vending machines or ticket counters in the train station. Most machines have an English language option, so don't worry if you don't speak Japanese. If you need help deciding which ticket to purchase, use a route map or ask a station attendant for help. I recommend to buy the JR Pass for unlimited access to trains.  Check JR Pass discount HERE. Use the Japan Travel by Navitime or  Japan App Office Travel App to check your destination's best train and route. You can download it through the App Store or Playstore.

Step 2: Enter the station

Once you have your ticket, head to the entrance gate. Insert your ticket into the ticket gate, and the gate will open. Be sure to retrieve your ticket from the gate as you pass through. If you're using a prepaid IC card (such as Suica or Pasmo), simply touch the card to the reader at the gate.

Step 3: Find your platform

After passing through the gate, look for signs indicating the train line and the direction you need to take. Follow the signs to your platform.  Apart from the ticket, you can also check the travel details on the Japan Travel Application App. If you're unsure which platform to go to, check the route map or ask a station attendant.

Step 4: Board the train

When your train arrives, wait for passengers to exit the train before boarding. Once the passengers have cleared, enter the train and find a seat. If the train is crowded, it's common to stand. Be aware that some seats are reserved, so if you see a seat with a ticket on it, find another seat or stand. If you have a JR pass, you can choose reserved or non-reserved seats.

Step 5: Enjoy the ride

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride! Trains in Japan are typically clean, quiet, and comfortable. Some trains even offer snacks and beverages for purchase. If you're taking a longer train ride, consider bringing a book or something to occupy your time.

Step 6: Exit the train

When your stop approaches, gather your belongings and make your way to the door. Trains in Japan usually announce the next stop in both Japanese and English, so listen for your stop. If you're unsure, ask a fellow passenger or check the route map.

Step 7: Exit the station

After exiting the train, follow signs to the station exit. Insert your ticket into the ticket gate to exit the station. If you're using a prepaid IC card, touch the card to the reader at the gate.

Types of trains in Japan

There are several types of trains in Japan, ranging from local trains to high-speed bullet trains. Here are some of the most common types of trains in Japan:

1. Local trains: These are the slowest trains and stop at every station along a particular route.

2. Rapid trains: These trains are faster than local trains, but still make stops at most stations along a route.

3. Express trains: These trains skip many stations and are faster than local and rapid trains.

4. Limited express trains: These are even faster than express trains and usually offer reserved seating. Check Train Rates via KLOOK HERE

5. Shinkansen or bullet trains: These high-speed trains can travel up to 320 km/h and connect major cities in Japan. Check JR Pass Discount HERE.

How to buy train ticket in Japan?

Buying train tickets in Japan can be a little confusing, especially if you don't speak Japanese. Here are the steps to follow:

1. Identify your route: Determine your starting point and your destination. You can use online resources like Google Maps or the Japan Transit Planner to find out the train routes and fares.

2. Choose a ticket type: There are various types of tickets available, such as regular tickets, reserved seat tickets, and commuter passes. If you're traveling a long distance, you may want to consider buying a Japan Rail Pass, which allows unlimited travel on Japan Railways (JR) trains for a fixed period of time.

3. Buy your ticket: You can buy your ticket at a ticket machine or a ticket office at the station. Most ticket machines have an English-language option. Some machines only accept cash, so make sure you have enough yen on hand. If you're buying a Japan Rail Pass, you'll need to purchase it before you arrive in Japan from a travel agency or online.

4. Board the train: Make sure to arrive at the station early enough to find your platform and board the correct train. You can check the train schedule and platform information on the electronic displays in the station.

5. Use your ticket: If you have a regular ticket or a reserved seat ticket, you'll need to insert your ticket into the automated gate to enter the platform. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, you'll need to show it to the attendant at the gate. Check JR PASS Rates via Klook HERE

Exit the station: When you reach your destination, you'll need to insert your ticket into the gate to exit the station. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, you'll need to show it to the attendant.

Remember to always keep your ticket or pass with you during your journey, as you may need it to exit the station or transfer to another train. If you lost your JR pass, you can no longer replace it or buy a new one.
