It was 4:30 o’clock in the morning when we started to trek going to the summit of Mt. Kupapey (also known as Mt. Kufafey). This mountain is 1647 MASL, with trail difficulty of 3/9. The summit will offer an overlooking view of majestic Maligcong Rice Terraces and amazing sea of clouds.
The first 500 meters was cemented and the rest was forest trail. We were a little bit sleepy and chillin as we passed along the dark trail. Make sure that you have head lamp or flashlight when going to Mt. Kupapey. You can also use the flashlight of your mobile phone. It will be only your source of light before the sunrise. There’s no major assault, everything was smooth. I can say this is one of the easiest mountain to climb in Mountain Province. I don't feel difficulty in breathing and there's no pain on my legs and feet when we reached the summit. Trekking time is around 1-2 hours.
It’s advisable to wear proper clothes especially for those who have low tolerance of cold temperatures. Wear jacket or pullover to stay warm while hiking. I also recommend to bring enough water and trail food.
While waiting for the sunrise, a group of young tourists made a bonfire. The flaming wood created an amazing light and everyone loved the heat coming from the fire. Some were sitting on the side while others were listening to music. And me, I’m eating my favorite snack lol.
I'm expecting to witness the sea of clouds, unfortunately, only a few clouds appeared near the summit. Good thing the view below the mountain was awesome. The Maligcong Rice Terraces was stunning and I can't resist to take a lot of pictures.
Everyone immediately documented the rising sun. Some tourists took selfie and groupie, even the dogs joined on the picture taking.
For photography and videography enthusiasts, it’s advisable to do time lapse using your smartphone, action camera or digital camera. It's wonderful to capture the moving clouds and rising sun. For sure, you would love the result.
Overall, Mt Kupapey is a perfect mountain for those who want to experience hiking. It’s considered a minor hiking destination. Beginners and hardcore hikers would definitely love the, weather, trail and the beautiful view from the summit.

HOW TO GO THERE
From Manila, take a Coda bus ride to Bontoc town. Upon arrival, walk to the jeepney terminal to Maligcong which is near the commercial center. Fare is P20 and travel time is approximately 20-30 minutes. It is advisable to topload to see the beautiful sceneries along the road.
Bontoc can also be reached either through Baguio or Banaue route. GL Trans Bus Lines ply the Halsema Highway to Bontoc from Baguio, first trip is 7:00AM and travel time is approximately 5 hours.
