Kaamatan Festival 2026 in Sabah, Malaysia: A Cultural Journey into the Heart of Borneo's Harvest Celebration

If you're planning a trip to Sabah, Malaysia, one cultural event that deserves a place on your itinerary is the Kaamatan Festival, also known as the Harvest Festival. Recognized as one of Sabah's most important cultural celebrations, Kaamatan is held annually throughout the month of May, with the grand finale taking place on May 30 and 31.

The festival is a thanksgiving celebration observed by the Kadazan-Dusun community to honor the rice harvest and express gratitude for a fruitful farming season. Deeply rooted in tradition, Kaamatan serves as a vibrant showcase of Sabah's indigenous heritage, customs, and community spirit.

Together with fellow media representatives and key opinion leaders (KOLs) from the Philippines, Vietnam, China, and India, we had the opportunity to visit the Kadazan-Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Cultural Village in Penampang to witness Kaamatan Festival 2026 firsthand.

The experience provided an immersive look into Sabah's rich indigenous culture. We watched colorful traditional performances, interacted with local communities, sampled authentic Sabahan cuisine and beverages, learned about the history and traditions of the Kadazan-Dusun people, and captured stunning cultural moments through photography and video.

Beyond the cultural showcases, the festival grounds were filled with vendors offering a variety of local delicacies, traditional attire, handcrafted accessories, souvenirs, and artisanal products, making it an excellent destination for both cultural exploration and shopping.
