A Perfect 7-Day Itinerary to Explore Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara

If you're planning a trip to Japan, Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara are three cities that should be on your itinerary. These three destinations offer a rich blend of traditional culture, modern attractions, and stunning natural beauty. To help you plan your trip, I've created a 7-day itinerary that will allow you to experience the best that each city has to offer.

Golden Pavillion in Kyoto

Day 1: Osaka

Start your trip in Osaka, the third-largest city in Japan. Osaka is known for its delicious food, lively nightlife, and friendly locals. Spend your first day exploring the city's many attractions, such as the Osaka Castle, which is one of Japan's most famous landmarks. The castle is surrounded by a moat and beautiful gardens, making it a great place to take a walk and learn about the city's history.

In the afternoon, head to the Dotonbori neighborhood, which is famous for its street food and neon lights. Here, you can sample some of Osaka's famous dishes, such as takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (a savory pancake). Don't forget to take a photo of the Glico running man above Ebisubashi bridge.

Day 2: Osaka

Spend your second day in Osaka visiting some of the city's other famous landmarks, such as the Umeda Sky Building. This unique building has an observation deck on the top floor, offering incredible views of the city.  If you have a fear of heights, this destination is not recommended. You can take a picture of the building from the outside and enjoy their Insta-worthy restaurant located on the ground level of the building. Another great place to visit is the Shitennoji Temple, which is one of the oldest temples in Japan.

In the evening, head to the Shinsekai neighborhood, which is known for its retro atmosphere and delicious kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). Take a stroll through the area and try some of the local cuisine.

Fushimi Inari in Kyoto

Day 3: Kyoto

On your third day, take a train to Kyoto, which is known for its beautiful temples and gardens. Start your day at the Fushimi Inari Shrine, which is famous for its thousands of torii gates. Take a hike through the gates and enjoy the beautiful views of the city.  Please be advised that a lot of tourists are going here. It's recommended to go early (around 8am) or you can climb up to the top of the shrine to avoid crowds and to have perfect pictures.

In the afternoon, visit the Kinkaku-ji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion. This stunning temple is covered in gold leaf and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. This is a must-visit destination in Kyoto. You should include Golden Pavilion in your Japan Itinerary.

Gion District

Day 4: Kyoto

Spend your fourth day in Kyoto exploring some of the city's other famous landmarks, such as the Kiyomizu-dera Temple. This temple is located on a hillside and offers incredible views of the city. Another great place to visit is the Nijo Castle, which is known for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture.

In the evening, head to the Gion neighborhood, which is known for its traditional tea houses and geisha culture. Take a stroll through the area and see if you can spot a geisha walking to her appointment. If you have JR pass, you can use this pass on a bus bound for Gion district.

Day 5: Nara

On your fifth day, take a train to Nara, which is known for its beautiful parks and temples. Start your day at Nara Park, which is home to over 1,200 wild deer. You can buy special deer crackers to feed the deer and take some fantastic photos. These adorable deers bow to every tourist, especially to those who will feed them.

In the afternoon, visit the Todai-ji Temple, which is one of Japan's most famous temples. The temple is home to a giant Buddha statue and is surrounded by beautiful gardens.
