Hike for Refugees with UNHCR

It hurts so much to see children crying, hurting and dying in this world. Every time I see photos, videos and articles about child refugees, it really breaks my heart. Over 68 million people around the world are currently displaced from their homes. They flee their country for their safety, looking for a new place to rebuild their lives.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), refugees around the world walk an estimated 2 billion kilometers every year to reach the first point of safety. The global campaign called "2 Billion Kilometers to Safety" calls on people all over the world to cover this distance traveled by refugees through individual acts of solidarity. These acts when taken together, acknowledge the resilience and strength of refugees.

It's nice to be part of a trip that has a purpose. Together with UNHCR Philippines Goodwill Ambassador Atom Araullo and Trail Adventours, we joined the hike-for-a-cause up Mt. Nagpatong in Tanay Rizal. This wonderful activity is for the UNHCR campaign's "2 Billion Kilometers to Safety," in support of the plight of refugees and internally displaced persons.

Mt. Napatong, otherwise known as "Nagpatong Rock", is one of the newest hiking spots in the Philippines. It is located at the foot of Mount Masungki in Barangay Cuyambao, Tanay Rizal, which features two towering limestone cliffs facing each other. It's an easy hike with amazing views, perfect for beginners and first timers.

Mt. Napatong is truly a good hiking destination especially for those who love adventures. If you have fear of heights, this place is not for you. Climbing to the top of the rock formation is not easy. I swear, it's really scary. It involves climbing through bamboo ladders and vertical walls. If this is you first time, please ask assistance from your guide.

With this hiking activity up Mt. Napatong, we're able to contribute 150 kilometers to the global target.

You can also support UNHCR's 2B KM Safety Campaign by registering and adding your kilometers (distance by hiking, running, walking, etc) directly the campaign website stepwithrefugees.org/en-ph/.
