Mt. Ulap | Dayhike and Traverse

Mt Ulap is one of the favorite destinations in the province of Benguet. The mountain offers a breath-taking view of the Cordilleras as well the subalpine grassland and pine ridges.

Most of the outdoor enthusiasts preferred dayhike when hiking Mt Ulap. Mountaineers considered it as a minor climb at 1846 MASL with a difficulty of 3 out 9. Even you are a beginner in hiking/ mountaineering, you can handle the long-hours of walking. From the jump off point, which located in Brgy. Ampucao, Itogon, expect a combination of concrete and rough roads.

We enjoyed walking along the vast rolling hills and slopes. The enormous trees gave colors to the each mountains. Everything here was amazing. It's a one of the best mountain in Benguet if you want to escape from the pollution and traffic jam in the Metro. The refreshing air and scenery were very relaxing. Some of the trails were covered with trees (Pine trees) and most were exposed grassland slopes, perfect spots for selfies and group photos. We also saw some cows enjoying the fresh grass. They're very cute! haha!

Don't forget to put sunblock on your skin. The mountain is exposed from the direct heat of the sun. It's really hot in Mt. Ulap. If you to make your skin tan, hiking is best way to achieve this skin color. What do you think? Lol! You can also wear rashguard as well hat or cap. Make sure you have enough water and trail food. I suggest bring 1.5 liters of water. Bring lots of energy food like chocolates and nuts,

The best spots to take photo include the grassland slopes of Ambunao Paoay, Gungal Rock, Pong-ol Burial Caves and the highest point of Mt. Ulap. Get an extra care when taking pictures specially in the iconic Gungal Rock. It's not advisable to play around the area.

If you want to feel the mountain at night, that's not problem. It's allowed to stay overnight at the mountain. Campsites are located at the Ambunao Paoay. Please make you sure you will not create a scene to disturb other groups. Be a considerate mountaineer!

In Sta Fe (traverse), you can find here sari sari stores that sell  meryenda like pancit, siomai, palamig, bilo-bilo, etc. They also sell mineral water, soda and juices. Going to the exit point, you will pass by in different hanging bridge which  made up of steel.

For those who are planning to visit Mt. Ulap, I recommend to take the traverse instead of the backtrail. It's a different experience to see the view on the other side of the mountain. You can find more pine trees here and a burial cave which coffins are made up of wood.
